Piling cargo high raises the centre of gravity and makes the rig easier to tip, and rollovers happen when a driver turns too fast. Keeping the load low and slowing down for corners, on-ramps and off-ramps are the two things that count most, and low cargo matters even more in a combination than in a straight truck.

A fully loaded rig is roughly ten times more likely to roll over in a crash than an empty one, because the load sits high and raises the centre of gravity. Note that this is the opposite of stopping distance, where the empty rig is the harder one to handle.

Triples have a rearward amplification of 3.5. What does that number tell a driver about the last trailer?

Rearward amplification is the crack-the-whip effect measured. A figure of 2.0 means the rear trailer is twice as likely to turn over as the tractor, so a triple's 3.5 means the last trailer rolls about three and a half times as easily as a five-axle rig. It is a rollover number, not a stopping or off-tracking number.

A driver notices the trailer is leaning because the freight has all been stacked along one side. What should be done before the trip?
  • Redistribute the load so it is centred and spread out
  • Leave it and simply reduce speed by 10 mph for the whole trip
  • Slide the fifth wheel forward to level the trailer
  • Move the load to the very front of the trailer instead

A load pushed to one side makes the trailer lean and makes a rollover more likely, so the fix is to centre the cargo and spread it out rather than to drive around the problem. Sliding the fifth wheel changes weight on the axles, not the side-to-side balance of the freight.

Which takes longer to stop, a large combination vehicle running empty or the same rig fully loaded?
  • The empty one, because stiff springs and strong brakes give poor traction
  • The loaded one, because the extra weight has to be brought to a stop
  • They stop in the same distance, since the brakes are sized to the axles
  • The empty one, but only on wet pavement

Empty and lightly loaded rigs take longer to stop than loaded ones. The very stiff suspension springs and strong brakes give the tyres poor grip, so the wheels lock easily instead of slowing the vehicle, and a locked trailer wheel starts a jackknife rather than a stop.

How does a bobtail tractor, with no semitrailer attached, compare for stopping?
  • It is hard to stop smoothly and needs more distance than a fully loaded tractor-semitrailer
  • It stops in about half the distance of a loaded tractor-semitrailer
  • It stops in the same distance, because the brakes are unchanged
  • It stops shortest of all, which is why bobtails may follow more closely

Tests have shown bobtails are very hard to stop smoothly and take longer to stop than a tractor-semitrailer loaded to its maximum gross weight. Drivers who assume a light vehicle stops quickly are the ones caught out by it.

Why does a driver of any combination rig keep a lot of following distance and look far down the road?
  • So braking can start early and a panic stop is never needed
  • So the trailer brakes have time to warm up before they are needed
  • So the trailer hand valve can be used instead of the foot brake
  • So the rig can be stopped without downshifting

Room ahead is what lets a driver brake early and gently. A surprise that forces a hard stop is what locks the wheels of a combination rig, swings the trailer out and jackknifes the tractor, so the space is the real protection against a skid.

A trailer jackknife starts when the trailer wheels lock up and the trailer swings around. When is it most likely?
  • When the trailer is empty or lightly loaded
  • When the trailer is loaded to its maximum gross weight
  • When the load is stacked high but centred
  • When the tractor is pulling two loaded trailers

Locked trailer wheels have no grip, so the trailer swings out of line. That happens most readily on an empty or lightly loaded trailer, where there is little weight holding the tyres down. Weight in the trailer makes a jackknife less likely, even though it makes a rollover more likely.

    Do not revise first. You want to know which subjects are actually weak, and a clean run tells you that in ten minutes.

What a hinge in the middle changes

A straight truck goes roughly where you point it. A combination does not. The trailer wheels cut inside the tractor wheels through a turn, so the corner you cleared going in is the corner you hit coming out. On a wet road an empty trailer will step out long before a loaded one. Brake hard while the rig is already bent and the trailer keeps pushing, which is how a jackknife starts and why the recovery is the opposite of what your hands want to do.

Most of this test is those ideas, asked in ways that only make sense if you understand the mechanism rather than the phrase. Learning the words off-tracking and jackknife will not get you through it.

Coupling and uncoupling

The other half is procedure, and it is the half that is easy to lose marks on because the order matters and the reasons behind each step are what get asked. Where the fifth wheel should sit before you back under. Why you raise the landing gear only after the tug test, and what the tug test actually proves. Which way round the air lines go and what happens if you cross them. Why a trailer left with its parking brake off is a trailer that may not be there when you come back.

None of it is difficult once you have done it. All of it is easy to half-remember, and the questions are written to find the half you skipped.

Nearly every Class A vehicle has air brakes, so most people sitting this test need that one as well. They overlap: trailer brakes, the emergency line and the spring brakes all appear in both. Working through the two together takes less time than doing them a month apart.

Questions about this test

Who needs the combination vehicles test?
Anyone going for a Class A licence, which is what you need to pull a trailer heavy enough to matter. If you only plan to drive a straight truck or a bus you will not be asked to sit it.
Is this the same as the air brakes test?
No, they are separate tests, though the material overlaps around trailer brakes and the emergency air line. Most Class A drivers need both, and studying them in the same week saves time because the systems connect.
How many questions are on the combination vehicles test?
Commonly around twenty, with eighty per cent needed to pass, but the exact count is set by your state. Where a state publishes a different figure we cite that state's own handbook rather than assuming the common answer applies.
What is off-tracking and why does it keep coming up?
Off-tracking is the way the rear wheels of a combination follow a tighter path than the front wheels through a turn. It comes up constantly because it decides how you take corners, and getting it wrong is how mirrors, kerbs and fences get hit.
Do I need to memorise the coupling steps in order?
Yes, and more importantly you need to know what each step proves. The questions ask why a step exists as often as they ask what comes next, so learning the sequence as a chain of checks works better than a list.
Will this help with the pre-trip inspection skills test?
It helps with the knowledge behind it, because the same components come up. It is not a replacement: the pre-trip is a hands-on skills test where you point at parts and say what you are checking, which has to be practised on a real vehicle.
